SK Typing Lab is a free typing practice tool built for Victorian Selective Entry High School (SEHS) candidates. The SEHS writing section is fully typed on a computer, so students need to type quickly and accurately under timed conditions. Our Typing Lab helps Year 5 to Year 8 students build typing speed and muscle memory before exam day.
The ACER-administered SEHS exam gives students only 40 minutes to complete two writing tasks. Slow typing is one of the most common reasons strong writers lose marks - great ideas never reach the page in time. SK Typing Lab helps by:
Choose a passage, start the timer, and type what you see on the screen. The tool highlights errors in real time and shows your words-per-minute and accuracy at the end of each run. Most students practise for 10 to 15 minutes a day, three or four times a week.
Short daily sessions beat long weekly ones. Set up a consistent practice spot with a proper keyboard (not a tablet). Encourage accuracy first, then speed. If your child is still hunt-and-pecking in Year 6, start typing practice as early as possible - it takes months, not weeks, to build real speed.
How fast do students need to type for the SEHS exam?
Most students aim for 25-30 words per minute with good accuracy. Anything above 20 wpm is workable.
Is SK Typing Lab free?
Yes, it is free for all registered SK Edge Prep students.
When should my child start typing practice?
Ideally 6-12 months before the exam. Typing speed builds slowly through consistent practice.
Does this replace a typing course?
No. It is focused on SEHS-style passages and exam readiness rather than full touch-typing instruction.
