Poetry is one part of the RC section. Build complete reading comprehension skills with these SK Edge Prep tools:
Yes. The Reading Comprehension section of the Victorian Selective Entry exam regularly includes poetry passages alongside prose. Students are asked to identify figurative language, interpret tone and mood, infer meaning from context, and analyse how the poet's choices affect meaning. Practising poetry analysis is an important part of RC preparation.
The three most tested skills are: (1) Figurative language - identifying and interpreting metaphors, similes, personification and alliteration; (2) Vocabulary in context - working out the meaning of unfamiliar words from how they are used in the poem; and (3) Tone and mood - understanding the emotional register of a poem and how the poet creates feeling through word choice. This tool covers all six key skill areas.
The modules are designed for Year 5-8 students preparing for the Victorian Selective Entry High School test. The poems and questions are calibrated to the reading and reasoning level expected at this stage. Younger students (Year 5-6) may find some modules more challenging - that is intentional, as the exam itself requires above-average comprehension skills.
Yes, completely free - no account needed, no credit card, no time limit. SK Edge Prep offers this as a free resource because we believe every student preparing for selective entry deserves quality practice material. If you find it helpful, explore our full preparation platform which includes SK Mock Tests, SK Writing Lab, and more.
Learn Mode gives you unlimited time and access to hints for each question. Focus on understanding the techniques and building your analysis skills. Timed Mode adds a 90-second timer per question (similar to exam conditions) and hides hints. Start with Learn Mode, then switch to Timed Mode once you feel confident.
Both approaches work. By Module lets you focus on one skill at a time (e.g. figurative language only). This is best when you want to strengthen a specific weakness. By Poem gives you a full reading experience with mixed question types - closer to what the actual exam feels like. We recommend starting with modules, then moving to full poems for exam simulation.
